TPE Fume Cupboards – An Overview

Specifically designed to provide a safer working environment, the TPE series of fume cupboards is one of the most effective fume management control system available today.

The TPE range of  fume laboratory cupboards offer flexibility in design drawn from over 30 years experience in working with our key specifiers and users. This means dimensions, materials and user needs can be meet without delay at minimum additional cost while still maintaining the high standards of efficiency and safety performance. 

The broad product portfolio of fume cupboards or fume hoods, quite unique to TPE, offers users a varied choice and  provides for architects and engineers solutions not always readily available in the market. 

Our pre-delivery quality control and testing ensures a smooth transition from manufacture to installation. All facets of the process are controlled, right through to final IQP or NATA certification to AS/NZS2243.8 – Safety in Laboratories. 

Another unique aspect of TPE fume cupboards is our “in house” design of the Advanced Air™ fume cupboard safety controllers. This design is now proven throughout Australasia and Asia.  Models include Fixed Volume by-pass, EcoAir™ (VAV), and the sophisticated VSS™ (VAV) model. These designs are robust and are able to withstand extreme conditions and environments. 

The accuracy of the Ecoair™ and VSS™ when fitted to the fume cupboards offers known outcomes for specifiers. The ability to re-programme and the adaptability of the product means we can design systems that meet the stringent ASNZS air flow standards across a number of fume cupboard designs.   

There are many options available in fume cupboard layout and finish from exterior carcass, the work surface material, the type of sash, fixed or variable volume, use of perchloric acid (requiring removable work surface with sump and interior baffle sprays), the types of tap ware and electrical services, under bench frames or cabinets,  and methods of installation.

 

TPE’s Product Range Includes the Following:

  • EcoAir® Fume Cupboards: a Variable Air Volume (VAV) range that reduces extracted air volume through lowering the sash. This is available with the optional automatically closing Ecosash®. VAV fume cupboards are not recommended for applications where heavy acid digestions are performed. 
  • Labrocare® Fume Cupboards: A Constant Air Volume (CAV) Range of Fume Cupboards. These are specifically designed for constant extraction rates and therefore are advised for use where fume scrubbing is required.

This is a fume cupboard range designed for the professional laboratory where energy saving via extraction volume minimization and/or quieter fans (for eg. university extraction systems positioned in residential areas) is required.  This range uses a Variable Air Volume (VAV) system to reduce extraction rates as the sash is lowered.   • Labrocare®:

The versatile general purpose fume cupboard. Download Specsheet here. This range extracts at a constant volume – but can be fitted with the Ecosash® Control System (however the Ecosash is not recommended for fume scrubbers – since fume scrubbers need consistent air flow).

  • Labrocare® Fume Cupboards with Top-Mounted Scrubbers (recommended for perchloric acid use):

The Labrocare® range can be fitted with a top-mounted scrubber for applications where the typical space required for the external location of scrubbers is limited. This range is particularly useful for perchloric acid digests where this acid will result in combustion risks if allowed to travel into the duct. Download Specsheet here

  • Labrocare® Fume Cupboards with Top-Mounted Scrubbers for HF Use:

Many of the main features of fume cupboard construction required for perchloric acid also apply for hydrofluoric acid, except that for hydrofluoric acid, the hazard arises more from skin contamination than from explosion. In particular, the interior shall be crevice-free with smooth surfaces for easy decontamination. A handheld shower on a flexible hose is very useful for washing down the interior surfaces of the fume cupboard. The Labrocare® range is available with an epoxy-coated mild steel inner carcass along with the standard aluminium fascia for applications where flammable materials are being handled. The Labrocare® ‘M’ range is especially practical for residue testing or for fuel testing. Download Specsheet here

Ecosash® Fume Cupboard Auto Closure System (Can be retro-fitted to most fume cupboards)

Ecosash™ automatically lowers the fume cupboard sash when the operator is not in front of the fume cupboard. This reduces airflow consumption, for substantial energy savings.

For example, if 10 sashes could be closed for 40% of any eight-hour period, you will save over 70% air volume. Less laboratory air needs to be heated or cooled, and less energy is used by air extraction systems.

Standard fume cupboards use a lot of energy. Ecosash™ energy savings have an estimated payback time of less than 18 months.

Ecosash™ also improves fume containment, enhancing operator and laboratory safety. An in-built safety sensor detects any obstruction hazard and stops the sash closing, avoiding accidents.

The system is easy to install and is also quickly retrofitted to most popular brands of fume cupboard/fume hood.

The Ecosash has been designed to reduce unnecessary energy loss in laboratories where VAV (Variable Air Volume) fume cupboards are operating by means of automatically closing the fume cupboard door which in turn restricts the amount of conditioned air being extracted out of the laboratory. 

System Description

The Ecosash System consists of:

How It Works

The Advanced Air™ Toxic Fume Wet Scrubber offers excellent air pollution control, removing toxic/acidic fumes from the exhaust airstream before it is passed into the atmosphere.

With this fume scrubbing system, the contaminated exhaust air is deflected through a water spray and polypropylene pall rings. The solid toxic particles absorb water and drop out as dirty water which can either pass to waste or be held by the recirculating tank. A mist eliminator is incorporated in line to remove any remaining moisture and contaminants before the air exits the outlet.

The scrubbers are made of corrosion-resistant material with no metals in the air stream and, depending on the model, can collect particles, gases or acid gases. For gaseous pollutant collection, the pollutant must be soluble in water, but the wet scrubber can capture relatively small dust particles with water droplets.

TPE designed scrubbers can be mounted directly to the fume cupboard or inline.

Fume Eliminator Systems

 

Advanced Air™ fume eliminator

 

The Advanced Air™ Toxic Fume Eliminator provides air pollution control, removing lower level toxic/acidic fumes from the exhaust airstream before it is passed into the atmosphere.

The contaminated exhaust air is deflected through a series of eliminator blades. The solid toxic particles absorb water and drop out as dirty water which can either pass to waste or be held by the recirculating tank. The eliminator blades remove remaining moisture and contaminants before the air exits the outlet.

The eliminator blades are made of corrosion-resistant polypropylene material with no metal in the air stream and, depending on the model, can collect particles, gases or acid gases.

TPE eliminators are normally inline roof mounted.
