Ship Loaders and Unloaders

Shiploaders are notorious dust generators as they involve generation of dust caused by material dropping from height. Even with telescopic type shiploading covers, cascade chutes or spoon type chute ends on shiploading loadout, there will always be an element of dust produced by the product as it hits the pile below or the sides or bottom of the ship’s hold. The nature of the hold also means that dust generated by this action can ride up the sides of the hold with the flow of air generated, and escape the ship’s hatch.

In ship unloading applications, either with grab buckets or with auger type unloaders, there will be dust generated wherever the product is disturbed.

 

DUST GENERATION FROM SHIPLOADING OPERATIONS USING DUAL TELESCOPIC CHUTES

Due to the open nature of the shiploading application, it is impossible to treat the dust by traditional collection methods once it leaves the chute. Dry fog nozzles can be mounted either on a ring manifold arrangement mounted on the shiploading chute itself, or on the sides of the ships hold using drop-in manifolds that can be winched down from the top of the hatch (or a combination of both). Shiploading rings and side-mounted manifolds use uni-directional nozzle mounts, which can be used to direct fog where it’s needed. This means that fog can be directed with the product as it falls to the impact point below (the natural downdraft created also draws the fog down with the product), but also nozzles directed horizontally can be used to create a fog ‘blanket’, that will prevent fugitive dust from exiting the hold.

 

CHUTE MOUNTED DRY FOGGING RING SYSTEMS

The systems are effective at suppressing dust, with measured reduction figures of 90% dust reduction by volume being recorded in shiploading applications. The systems can also be used with moisture sensitive materials, with a moisture addition level of around 0.1% typical, meaning that Dry Fog has been successfully used for shiploading and unloading of clinker, cement, bauxite and other moisture sensitive materials.

 

SHIP MOUNTED MANIFOLD DRY FOGGING SYSTEMS

Shiploading applications use Dust Solution’s unique DSN-12 nozzles, which are the most powerful nozzles in the range. These give a good projection and volume of dry fog which means that the large open area of a ship’s hold can be tackled with Dry Fog, creating the fog blanket which dust travelling up the sides of the hold will not penetrate.
