Fume Cupboard Maintenance
ARE YOU AWARE…… …. OF THE MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS FOR LABORATORY FUME CUPBOARD MAINTENANCE, AIR FLOW AND SAFETY INSPECTION? Workcover Occupational Health and Safety requirements are that the periodic servicing and testing as set out in the Australian Standard 2243.8 1992 is the minimum program that shall be instituted. Marc Technologies are a NATA accredited Testing and Maintenance facility for fume cupboards and can help you meet the Australian Standard requirements. We can provide:

Six Monthly
- Perform an abbreviated smoke test in accordance with Appendix G. If a problem is evident, perform a full smoke test in accordance with Appendix G.
- Perform and abbreviated face velocity test in accordance with Appendix E. If a problem is evident, perform a full face velocity test in accordance with Appendix E.
- Inspect and maintain fans, their motors, drives (including belts) and bearings. Lubricate where appropriate.
- Check that the scrubber and washdown facility, if fitted, is functioning efficiently.
- Inspect the fire damper and the release mechanism, if fitted, and replace fusible link, if required.
- Check that any air cleaning device, if fitted is operating efficiently and maintain if required.
Check the condition of the thermal detector and sprinkler heads, if fitted.

Annually In addition to others specified in clause 5.5.3, the following additional maintenance operations shall be carried out:
- Remove any baffles and clean both the baffle and the rear of the chamber.
- Wash the entire interior surface of the chamber including the aerofoil, if fitted with dilute detergent solution and repair defects if necessary.
- Check the condition of the services to the cupboard and ensure that all are properly identified and operational.
- Check the stability and condition of the discharge stack.
- Inspect the condition of the exhaust ducting, where possible, particularly the joints and ensure all drain points are clear.
- Check make up air balance.
- Check the condition and satisfactory operation of the fume cupboard system.
- Check operation of the emergency isolator and isolation of services (see Clause 2.2.4)
- Check operation of the automatic isolator by providing inadequate air flow conditions to the fume cupboard (see Clause 2.2.4)
- Attach a self-adhesive label to the fume cupboard showing the inspection date, name of inspector and report number.
